Psychosexual therapy in Loughborough. Coming Autumn 2026.

Our sexual and intimate lives are deeply connected to our sense of self, our relationships, and our wellbeing. Yet they’re often the last thing we feel we can talk about — even with a doctor, a partner, or someone we trust. The silence around these experiences can make them feel more isolating, more shameful, and harder to change than they need to be.

Psychosexual therapy offers a private, non-judgmental space to explore the sexual and relational difficulties that are affecting your life. From low desire and painful sex to performance anxiety, sexual trauma, and intimacy problems, these are experiences that deserve proper, specialist care — and that’s exactly what we’re working towards offering at Charnwood Counselling.

We’re excited to be launching affordable psychosexual therapy sessions in Autumn 2026 with a trainee psychosexual therapist. If you’d like to be among the first to know when bookings open, register your interest below and we’ll be in touch.

Is psychosexual therapy for me?

You don’t need to have a diagnosable condition or a crisis to benefit from psychosexual therapy. Here are some of the things we often hear from people considering it:

  • I experience pain during sex and I’ve been told nothing is physically wrong
  • I’ve lost all interest in sex and I don’t know why
  • I feel so anxious about sex that I avoid it altogether
  • My relationship is suffering because of our sexual difficulties
  • I’ve never really enjoyed sex and I’m starting to wonder if something is wrong
  • Sex has changed since I had a baby, went through menopause, or became ill
  • I want to talk about something that happened to me and how it’s affecting me now
  • I feel ashamed of my desires and I don’t know who to talk to
  • My partner and I want to work through this together but we don’t know where to start
  • I just want to feel normal

How can psychosexual therapy help?

Over time, working with a specialist psychosexual therapist can help you to:

  • Understand the physical, emotional, and relational factors contributing to your difficulties
  • Reduce anxiety and self-consciousness around sex and intimacy
  • Process past experiences of sexual trauma at a pace that feels safe
  • Reconnect with your body and your own desires
  • Communicate more openly with a partner about needs, boundaries, and concerns
  • Develop a more accepting and compassionate relationship with your sexuality
  • Find a way forward that feels authentic to who you are
  • Feel less alone with experiences that are rarely spoken about

What is psychosexual therapy and what can it help with?

Psychosexual therapy is a specialist form of talking therapy focused on sexual health, intimacy, and the relational aspects of sexual experience. It draws on psychological understanding of how our thoughts, feelings, history, relationship patterns, and physical experiences interact – and addresses difficulties in a holistic, compassionate, and evidence-based way.

It is not sex education, and it does not involve any physical examination or contact. Sessions take place in exactly the same way as all our other therapy – a private conversation, in a calm room or online, between you and your therapist.

Psychosexual therapy is suitable for individuals as well as couples, and is available to people of any gender, sexuality, or relationship structure.

It can help with a wide range of concerns, including:

Sexual dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction affects many people at some point in their lives, and can involve difficulties with desire, arousal, orgasm, or erection. Common presentations include:

  • Low libido or loss of interest in sex — in one or both partners
  • Erectile dysfunction and performance anxiety
  • Delayed ejaculation or premature ejaculation
  • Difficulty reaching orgasm (anorgasmia)
  • Vaginismus — involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles that makes penetration painful or impossible
  • Dyspareunia — persistent pain during or after sex
  • Genito-pelvic pain and penetration disorder
  • Arousal difficulties and issues with lubrication

Sexual trauma and its effects

Past experiences of sexual abuse, assault, or coercion can have a lasting impact on how we feel about sex, intimacy, and our own bodies. Psychosexual therapy provides a safe, trauma-informed space to work through these experiences and their effects, which may include:

  • Avoidance of sex or physical intimacy following trauma
  • Flashbacks or dissociation during sexual activity
  • Difficulty feeling safe or present in intimate situations
  • Shame, guilt, or confusion about what happened
  • Complex feelings about your own sexuality following abuse
  • Difficulty trusting partners, even in a loving relationship

Intimacy and relationship difficulties

Sexual and intimacy difficulties often exist within the context of a relationship, and the two are rarely easy to separate. Therapy can help with:

  • Mismatched libidos – when partners have very different levels of desire
  • Loss of intimacy or connection following a significant life event
  • Intimacy problems after childbirth, illness, or surgery
  • Rebuilding sexual connection after infidelity or relationship breakdown
  • Difficulties communicating about sex, needs, or boundaries with a partner
  • Sexual concerns within LGBTQ+ relationships or non-traditional relationship structures

Identity, sexuality, and self-worth

Our sense of ourselves as sexual beings is closely tied to our confidence, identity, and self-worth. Psychosexual therapy can also support:

  • Confusion or anxiety about sexual identity or orientation
  • Shame or self-consciousness about sexual desires or fantasies
  • Body image difficulties that affect intimacy
  • Sexual concerns related to menopause, hormonal changes, or ageing
  • Adjusting to changes in sexual function following illness, injury, or medical treatment
  • Compulsive sexual behaviour or concerns about pornography use

Our counsellors

Psychosexual therapy at Charnwood Counselling will be led by Founder and Resident Psychotherapist, Jo Wiseman.

As a fully qualified therapist, registered with the BACP, Jo will provide affordable psychosexual therapy during her specialist training to become COSRT accredited – the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists, which is the UK’s leading professional body for psychosexual and relationship therapy.

Jo’s approach is warm, grounded, and deeply respectful. She understands that bringing sexual concerns to therapy takes courage, and she brings the same non-judgmental presence to this work that she brings to everything else.
